Similar project by Leo Burnett Interactive Outdoor Challenge (Industry Benchmark)

Interactive billboard by Leo Burnett

This was stunning to me as i saw this article and the date of articles. I was researching on some of my coding then suddenly when through some video that was share in my social media. I do notice on this campaign created by Mcdonald about the ice cream but i didn't look deeper into how the campaign was created and the few minutes of video i realised that the concept and idea are very similar to my ideas.
And the first thing come into my mind is that will my project be marked as plagiarism ? I was so afraid i texted my lecturer through social media about the news and he reply that it is ok. And he do say that the idea is not really original also due to it is created long time at oversea just that in malaysia is still new. And the project that done by Leo Burnett is by a team and i am creating it myself so it will very less percentage of marking as plagiarism. And ask me to continue my project.

This project had won two awards.

And this the video that i saw :

A big sigh after i saw these, maybe great mind think alike. And i am regret why didn't i come out the idea sooner. Hopefully this blog will mark a benchmark and reference for me to show that i am not plagiarising them.

Since there is a similar project that are found in malaysia. I am able to set it as one of the industry benchmark so that i am able to understand and improvise from existing sample.

After analysing this project the connection is similar which is using web connection to set data to the main server then transfer back to games, which we can say is using websocket to create interaction and make the phone as a controller. But this installation only able for one person at a time. Which did not fully utilize the power of websocket which allow multiple user. Maybe this is one of the experience they want to create. But they did utilise the power of gesture in mobile devices to give the user a very similar experience that they are really rotating the fan to make it spin. Which you will find in my installation.

As you can refer back to my previous blog that are talking about hybrid event, I did explain that by gamified the interactive installation; it is able to attract more crowds and giving them a feedback like rewards will motivate them to participate.

Hybrid Event In Malaysia

I think i do mention that i had a diploma certificate of Event Management. As my installation had great connection with event organizer, i had analysed some of the problem that are faced by event organizer.

Base on the feedback that are given by Sweii for SOI, she say that it will be good that i make a blog post about event in Malaysia. As my experience in while i am working as an intern and part timer, most of the event that are found in malaysia are these few types , Annual Dinner, Grand Opening, Roadshow, Exhibition, Concert and Conference.

Base on my experience, nowadays small and mid class company will find event organizer for the first two years. But after that they will start to organize the event by their marketing team. As for big company they will had their own event team and mostly will find advertising or creative agency to come out with creative campaign.

Malaysia's event organizing and program idea is like a cycle. If one company did this other company will just follow. How many halloween annual dinner have you attend before , pirate or masquerade? When we went to roadshow, we always will see this kind of games like lucky draw, or spinning wheel. When you see this kind of events, normally is because of one major issue which it is the budget or lazy event organizer. And in the industry people call this Hybrid Event. Hybrid event in simple definition is reusing other event idea and repackage to their own event.

To prove this you just need to google image search : malaysia masquerade annual dinner

and this is the result will show out

But these recent years, due to the evolution of technology, event industry had improvement but using gadget to wow the participant but normally are found large scale events.  For example like including games console like driving simulator games and kinect sensor games are some of most common one we can found. For launching and gala dinner will be project mapping.

Technology is one of the tool to enhance the experience of user. And by using the fun factor of games and price, the experience will even better. This is the reason why mostly roadshow event or promotion event will have game and price; to create crowd.

But there are some successful and create by the event organizer, or technology provider. Like touch panel , interactive installation or automatic photo booth.

We can say that is one of the area that interactive media designer can show off their skill. But for event organizer  first they will be thinking about costing, how much will the gadget cost. how much will the program cost. Then how much is their budget. Maintainent fees. Will the gadget user friendly and long lasting.

Most of the event props will be re use for maximum two or three years depends how carefully the organizers are and how lucky they are. Why say lucky because some of the gadget will be damage or even destroyed during the event.

Although malaysia event is not in a good level, but as a interactive designer plus graduated event student i think am to use my current project to solve some of the problem and also create a brand new experience to the event participant.

Target Audience Research

In my Statement of Intents i do show who are my target audience and i realise that i didn't include the research in my blog entry which affect the outcome of the point i had list in my SOI.

And this blog i will show the research that i had made to prove my statement and point. Base on the research result that i get from the dailymail uk about "Youngsters check their phones every ten minutes: One in 20 looks at their mobile every minute of the day" it show the impressive result on how often a mobile user check on the phone update.

And below is some of the data that are being collect during the research.

people aged 18 to 24 are so addicted to their handsets that they check them every nine minutes and 50 seconds.

The average British man looks at his phone every 22 minutes and 30 seconds while the typical woman looks at hers every 26 minutes and 15 seconds.

Those aged 25 to 34 are only slightly less obsessed with their mobiles, looking every nine minutes and 55 seconds, according to a survey of 2,000 people.

The interval rises to 21 minutes for 35 to 44-year-olds; 36 minutes for 45 to 54-year-olds; and an hour and a half for 55 to 64-year-olds.

This had show that how mobile had already take over part of our living style and we also can say that mobile device is part of our  "body". From this research i feel that i can emerge to people but what is the closest to their lifestyle and apply it to my idea and concept. By using mobile device to attract user attention and emerge them to my artefact and participant with the mobile devices differently.

Beside that, Event company also one of my target audience.

Base on the article "The Top 10 Challenges Facing Event Organisers" from liverpoolchamber.org.uk it list down 10 challenges often faced by the Event Organiser. And i do agree with because i am diploma holder of Event Management and have some experience organizing event. And below are the 10 challenges.

  1. Be Memorable
  2. Shrinking Budgets
  3. Short Lead Times
  4. Rise In Costs
  5. Environmental Issues
  6. Technology
  7. Having The Right People
  8. Staying On Track
  9. It's All In The Planning
  10. Anything That Can Go Wrong, Will go Wrong

Beside that, the are a similar article was found in About.com which also discuss about "Top Ten Issues for Event and Meeting Planners in 2010 and the New Decade". and below are the top 10 issues:

  1. Social Media Integration.
  2. Getting the C-Level to Buy In.
  3. Hybrid Events.
  4. Decreasing Budgets and Increasing Expectations.
  5. Recession Proofing your Resume through Education.
  6. Decreasing Attendance and Increasing Pressure.
  7. Popularity of Local Events.
  8. Strategic Meeting Management Programs.
  9. How to Take CSR past Recycling.
  10. Creativity Affecting the Bottom Line for an Event.
As we can see that are some similar point between both of the article and those are also the area i am trying to solve with my project.

Social media integration is one of the impact caused by mobile devices. Due to the easy access social media are able to access through mobile devices. And my project is using mobile device as tool, it will give advantage to my project.
Rise of cost and Shrinking budget. With the same technology of my project it is possible to create different outcomes which is able to help event organizer solve the problem. The technology are able to be recycle by changing the contents

Technology and Hybrid Event. The technology are growing especially mobile device which is growing non-stop, it is a possible technology to use as tool to remove hybrid event (same concept event that are able to find around the world).

Environmental Issues and Space is a issues for event organizer. Small space, huge installation plus area for participant will make the a event become so crowd and affect the experience of the participant. And my project are able to solve this problem. With just a screen a router and mobile device it will be whole new experience.

As we can see i had prove that my project have potential to help these two target audience and solve part of their problem.

Support Document for Statement of Intent

While doing my essay topic research i get inspiration for final project idea which are interactive event. I find this website of an experience marketing and event marketing agency George P Johnson. In the website it noted that
"Most event agencies view technology as simply an execution-based tool. We take a much broader, multi-dimensional approach. We believe event technology should improve your ability to manage an event while enhancing and extending the attendee experience – and do it at a reasonable price. We live in a digital world of experience, where users are accustomed to being active participants. When interactive marketing is truly integrated with an experience or event, the power to affect these users can be enormous."

This had prove the technology can be to the best tool to enhance the engagement of event. Beside that they also noted that benefit of event to :

-Extended Attendee Reach
-Predictive Modeling for Event Planning
-Instantaneous Digital Promotion
-Advanced Tracking & Analysis
-Meaningful Participation & Engagement

Beside the reason why i choose mobile device as one the main platform is because base on the UK Mail Online's article about "Youngsters check their phones every ten minutes: One in 20 looks at their mobile every minute of the day"

Research found 18-24 bracket check every 9 minutes and 50 seconds and those aged 25-34 take a peek every 9 minutes and 55 seconds. This help the event to know what are the trends and from the trend the event are able to engage to more people and their target audience.

Another reason is because mobile device these days had fast accesses to social media will help promote the event. George P Johnsan also noted that "successful social media strategies engage users in exciting and unexpected ways. So do successful experiential events. So it's not surprising that they work so well together."

base one  Event Tech graph it show that high-tech strategies are able to enhance event and trade show

Deeper Research on Websocket

Description
Reflection
Decision Making
Lead to action

Next week tutorial requirements (Sweii):
- Competitor Research
- Draft of SOI
- Most of the people had make decision on what technology to be use and now try research more on the idea and content

I realize i am in the group of knowing what technology to use but without the proper content. So i need to start and research on what is exited and what are the possibility of Websocket.

Definition of Websocket
Web Sockets is a next-generation bidirectional communication technology for web applications which operates over a single socket and is exposed via a JavaScript interface in HTML 5 compliant browsers.
Once you get a Web Socket connection with the web server, you can send data from browser to server by calling a send() method, and receive data from server to browser by an onmessage event handler.

Websocket still are something new to me, and it is a great challenge for myself to challenge my self learning, tasks and time management skill. So I had done some research on sample of what websocket can create. This not only can help me understand websocket even better, it also can help come out with idea and concept of what are i will create with websocket.

Tutorial:
Annotation
This example application shows how to use WebSockets, the Go programming language and jQuery to create a simple web chat application. From here i am able to get on my hand to try some simple programming language with the source that available. Although there are not much connection to my final project but from this i able to understand some of the coding language of websocket which i think is a good start.
The code source is at:
Annotation
This website show me the programming language of websocket allow me to understand what are the language i need to apply during what situation. In this tutorial it show, WebSocket Attributes, Events and Method. At last is also show me a simple example. Since i just started to learn how operate Websocket i think this website really help understand on the programming language. After understand the coding i am able to read other free websocket sources.

Annotation
This share all source of information and demo that are created with websocket previously. Due to websocket is still new and there are other 3rd party APIs like Ajax that are able create the same function as websocket.  This is the first site i found when i search on google about socket. It provide me basic knowledge and some example that what are the think that i am able to create with websocket which provide me idea to create my final idea by using websocket.

and Example/Competitor research:

This is some of the example and reference i get online and also my inspiration for my final assignment idea. And i am going to use mobile and website to connect so i basically start to some are the similar project that are available online.

below are  three similar work that create by chrome experiment  with websocket and mobile device as the controller or as a medium.

Accelerometer
This used websocket to connect to mobile and access to mobile accelerometer . when swing the phone u control the ball. They used javascript to code the ball fizik calculation.

Phone Touch Screen
This also access the mobile devices using websocket, but it require more than one person to play this game basically in tap the screen to make the player run faster.

Screen sync
This experimental website is using webcam to sync the the phone screen to make the mobile look like to device to see another aspect of the video that are presented in the website.

I am able collect some of the idea from what had been done by chrome experiment lab and think something similar or different . They do share source and code online and i am able to access to learn what are the APIs that they use. But to compare them with myself, i think i need scope down my area to focus on one thing. They project is create by a teams or more than a teams. And mostly industrial designer and professional program. I need to research more and start my learning sooner so that i able to finish my final project.
